Surfing takes practice like all things, with time it begins to connect more and more. As we start catching more waves, getting out into the line up, going for bigger fast waves, and starting to ride that wall – your pop up will also have to shift to make those things happen. Faster take off to catch faster waves. That being said, here we are going to walk you through Surf Salutation SEA, the third variation of pop up, to get you ready to catch those bigger faster waves.

We started with surf salutation A were we imitate the first kind of pop up where you stepping into your surf stance.

Then progress to Be where we slide the feet up.

And now we arrive at S E A  sea were we jump and land in our surf stance.

We encourage you to watch and read along, starting your practice on the mat and then taking for a ride in the water.

Continuing the path to the perfect pop up by surfing your mat.

In Surfasana, The Surf Salutations are the fundamental postures we practice on the mat, building movement and muscle memory to later take on the waves. But you already knew that, right? 😉

The intention behind these Surf Salutation is to practice how to pop up on a surfboard. Our surfing pop up is one of the most important pieces to master when learning to surf. Which is why we put so much time and effort into creating the muscle memory we need to make it happen as smooth and naturally as possible on the wave.

As previously mentioned there are three Surf Salutations, A, Be, and S-E-A, C. Each inspired by the three different types of surf popups from beginner to more advanced surfing ability. Today we are going to get into the Surf Salutation Be.

Just as your pop ups progress from stepping up to gliding up and finally jumping into a surf stance, the Surf Salutations influence a similar progression. In Surf Salutation Be we begin to make more dynamic movements, just as we would evolve our pop ups on the board.

Follow along below and watch our Surf Salutation Be tutorial video to make progress on the way to your perfect pop up – with us.

And now let’s flow through surf salutation B. Inhale. Right arm up, left arm follows. Exhale. Hollow low belly, reach forward.

Empty your air all the way out, forward fold. Inhale. Halfway lift. Exhale. Plant the palms, bend the knees. Hop back, landing with bent elbows. Lower all the way down. Shift your hands back for pop-up prep. Inhale. Chest down, feet up. Exhale. Downward facing dog. Inhale. High plank. Exhale. Step your right foot in, heel in, toes out. Reach up. Exhale. Come up into a surf stance. Hold for an inhale. As you exhale, reach your right arm up, left knee into the chest. Find balance. Exhale. Swivel your hips towards the front of the space with control. Take those left toes down to the mat, right hand down to the mat.

Lower all the way down. Shift your hands back. Inhale. Feet up, chest out. Exhale. Lift the chest. Inhale. Feet up, chest down. Exhale. Press back, downward facing dog. Inhale to a high plank. Left foot in heel in toes out. Reach up. Exhale. Press up, surf stance. Hold for an inhale. Exhale. Circle the left arm back and up, right knee into the chest. Find balance. Swivel your hips towards the front of the space. Take a deep bend to the standing knees. The right toes find the mat. The left hand finds the mat. Swivel the right arm down. High plank. Hold here. Exhale. Lower all the way down. Shift the hands back. Pop-up prep. Inhale. Chest down, feet up. Exhale. Downward facing dog. Find rest here for two full breaths.

Look up. Bend your knees. Hop forward. Reach the arms forward, kangaroo pose, long spine. Press into the outer edges of your feet to reach up. Palms touch overhead. Exhale. Release the thumbs down to heart center. Hands down by your side.

There is a moment…

A moment when your feet hit the board and you land in your Surf Stance. Maybe it’s not perfect, maybe your feet are too wide or too close or not quite on the spine of the board, but they are on there and you are riding a wave. This moment is related to almost no other sensation in the world. It is a moment and sensation that we want to help you attain. Because, once you do, you just might never stop seeking that perfect ride and in order to get to that “perfect ride” many things must be aligned. For now though let’s just work on our feet position and balance, our Surf Stance.

So…

It’s time to talk SURF STANCE
Surf stance is something you will hear being queued repeatedly throughout the Surfasana flow.
So for those of us who aren’t surf pros we are going to take a minute to breakdown this fundamental posture.

Your surf stance is the position you land in after having popped up onto the board or your mat.
If you’re a “regular surfer” you will have your left foot forward and if you are a “goofy surfer” you will have your right foot forward.

Wherever you land, be it regular or goofy – you land with your feet a little bit wider than shoulder width distance apart, knees bent, and your chest leaning slightly forward.
Keeping your back arm up reaching away from your body and your front arm up elbow bent & hand close to your chest.

In general your body follows your gaze, so in your surf stance you want to be looking in the direction you’re traveling.

This is the basics of a standard surf stance.

As we advance our practice on the mat in and in the waves there will be alternating variables. For example bringing your weight forward to accelerate, back to slow down, onto your toes to ride front side, your heels to ride back side, and so on…

But we’ll get into all that later, for now let’s just work on this our standard SURF STANCE

Surfing a wave is the sum of many details – when they all flow together its pure magic. From your physical body, state of mind, and breath to your understanding of/and connection with the ocean. These all take practice and perseverance. One of the first movements to master before you really start gliding down the wall of a wave, is popping up, aka getting from your belly to your feet on the board. Sounds simple, doesn’t it?

Anyone who has had their go at surfing will express otherwise. Remember all those details we mentioned, before you get on the board you need to perfectly sync up all of them to catch the perfect ride!

So…

How can we work on the fundamental movements we need to do this “pop up” business on our mats?

Let us introduce to you, the Pop Up Prep.

The pop-up prep came from a struggle that most beginner surfers experience, “How can I improve my takeoff?” In efforts to do this, we dissected the series of movements made when popping up on the board.

After some surf talks and trials, we came up with the pop-up prep, a repetitive movement made throughout the Surfasana practice. We repeat this motion in efforts to create muscle memory so that our bodies follow the same flow in the water. Syncing our breath to the movement just as we aim to do in the waves.

For pop-up prep, we shift our hands down by the ribs, same as you were instructed to do when learning to pop up on your board.

With your chest down and your feet up, you inhale in preparation to exhale and pump your feet, as you press into your hands and lift your chest. In the water, this would lead to your takeoff.

On the mat, start on your belly with your hands down by your ribs, elbows back. Inhale, chest down, feet up. Exhale, pump the feet, lift your chest. Do it again, and then again, to improve your takeoff.

And that’s the pop-up prep.

Have you ever wondered how a new practice is born? Well…

Here’s a taste: Surfasana was born from a hammock meditation and a deep desire for change, a dream to share a love and curiosity for surfing, yoga and meditation. (More on this in future blogs to come).

After much play between yogis and surfers a previous version of the Surf Salutation was born. Through continuous “surf talks“ about how we need our bodies to move, how to best build muscle memory and rehearse the pop up movement on the mat, we thought…How can we bring the perfect pop up to the mat? How can we bring the surf experience to the mat, to increase our increments of progress while out of the water? And the Surf Salutation A was born… directly inspired by the first pop up technique used by beginner-surfers.

Today we are thrilled to share with you that practice as it continues to evolve. Below is the latest rendition of the start to Surfasana -SURF SALUTATION A !

Enjoy, read along, play along with our tutorial video and let us know what you think.

INSPIRATION: The basic beginner popup reflected on the mat.

In Surfasana, the surf salutations are the fundamental postures we practice on the mat. Building up movement and muscle memory to later take on the waves. There are three surf salutations, A, Be, and SEA. Each inspired by the three different types of surf pop ups from beginner to more advanced surfing ability.

Surf salutation A is inspired directly by the basic pop up used by most beginner surfers: from a pushup position, bring in your back leg and open your knee on a 90 degree angle. Pivot around your leg while gently pushing up and land in a surf stance. One hand in front low, your back hand up for balance. That’s your basic pop up position.

THE FLOW: Surf Salutation A step-by-step.

And now let’s flow through surf salutation A:

  • Inhale, right arm up, left arm follows.
  • Exhale, hollowing your belly, reach forward and stall.
  • Empty your air all the way out, inhale for a halfway lift.

  • Exhale, plant your palms and step back into a high plank pose.
  • Hold here for an inhale.
  • Exhale, lower your knees, untuck your toes, chest and chin down.

Knee Chest Chin

  • Inhale, hips down, chest up.Exhale, lower down to the mat, shift your hands back and kick your feet up.
  • Pop up prep. Inhale. Exhale, pump the feet, lift the chest. Inhale, chest down, feet up. Exhale, tuck the toes.

Pop up Prep

  • Shift back into a downward facing dog.
  • Hold for an inhale here. Exhale, step your right foot up and roll onto the outer edge of your back foot. Inhale, reach up.

Knee in – reach up

  • Exhale, step up, landing in a low surf stance. Hold here for an inhale.
  • Exhale, rotate your back arm up, left knee up and find balance.
  • Bring your weight into the pinky toe side edge of your right foot. Find a hollow in your belly and relax your left shoulder.
  • With control swiveling your hips towards the front of the space. Taking your left toes down to the mat, right hand down and coming into a high plank pose.
  • Hold here for an inhale. Exhale, lower the knees, the chest and the chin.
  • Inhale hips down, chest up. Prepare for pop up prep.
  • Inhale, feet up, chest down.
  • Exhale, pump the feet. Inhale, chest down, feet up.
  • Exhale, tuck the toes, downward facing dog.
  • Inhale. Exhale, step your left foot up and in. Reach up.
  • Exhale, step up landing in a low surf stance.

Surfer Stance

  • From this low surf stance, imagine using the momentum of your body and your breath to glide into the wave.

  • As you exhale, rotate your left arm up, right knee up into the chest and find balance here.
  • Swivel your hips towards the front of the space.

  • With control, take your right toes down to the mat, left hand down, and find a high plank pose.
  • Hold here for an inhale. Exhale, lower the knees, the chest and the chin. Inhale, hips down, chest up.
  • Exhale, release and prepare for pop up prep.
  • Inhale. Exhale, pump the feet, lift the chest.
  • Inhale, chest down, feet up. Exhale, tuck the toes, downward facing dog. Find rest here.
  • Hold for another inhale.
  • Exhale, release. Inhale, look up.
  • Exhale, step up, land low with the arms reached out long in front, kangaroo.
  • Press into the outer edges of your feet. Inhale, reach the arms out and up. Exhale, hands down through heart center. Hands by your side.
